Research the SERPs first: Before you even begin writing your content or optimizing what you currently have, run some searches for your focus keywords to see what search engine results pages (SERPs) look like. If you see an AI overview or featured snippet, take note of what questions are being answered there. 
  2. Check the “People also ask” section: What questions here can you answer in your own content?
  3. Answer questions in a straightforward, concise way in your content: The content in AI overviews, featured snippets, and “People also ask” questions is almost always straightforward. For example, if you search “best SEO tips for 2025,” the AI overview answer starts with “For the best SEO strategies in 2025, prioritize high-quality, user-centric content…”

I’ve personally been doing this lately and have seen numerous improvements in my content getting pulled into the “People also ask” section.
  5. Make your article title ultra click-worthy: In 2025, boring article titles (and boring content, for that matter) are out. If you do get into those zero-click sections, you want searchers to be compelled to click on your article, whether their question was already answered or not.”

I’ve found that using Google Search Console (GSC) to optimize guides is incredibly helpful. A simple workflow to follow when updating any blog is to:

  1. Paste the link of your blog into Google Search Console.
  2. Set the date to cover the last 3 months of URL data.
  3. Sort by URL clicks to get an overview of the best-performing queries.

This way, you can see exactly which queries your blog is getting the most clicks on and which queries you can potentially include to generate better results and more organic traffic.

I’ve seen this simple strategy improve our impressions, clicks, average positions, and CTRs plenty of times. If done right, what’s even more interesting is the fact that this helps target the intent of the blog better.

After carefully analyzing the data, I even saw that some guides lost traffic after making these changes, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for us, as we were able to increase our organic sales on those specific guides.

In one instance, we observed a guide that lost around 200.2% in organic traffic, but at the same time, we gained an improvement of 250.00% in organic sales.”

I’ve learned this early on in my SEO journey: I’ve worked on topics that seemed relevant at the time but ultimately ended up diluting our domain authority. They brought in traffic, but our conversions were so low it hurt. I took the hard decision to get rid of these posts and shift our focus on building domain authority and updating old content. It boosted our rankings and brought in more relevant traffic – people who were more likely to buy. So conversions went up, too.

Years later, I began managing a company blog for a software company. They had these massive, encyclopedic guides that were meticulously organized—well-researched, but overwhelmingly long. They might have worked years ago, but as SEO and user behavior evolved, people started demanding faster, more digestible content. The era of lengthy, detailed guides was fading. They may still work for some topics and industries, but it wasn’t working for this blog. Our readers were responding better to quick answers, not a deep dive into the “whys,” “benefits,” or lengthy stories before getting to the point.

When I recommended rewriting those posts to make them more user-friendly for our target audience and aligned with current SEO trends, I was met with resistance: “But we worked so hard on these! How can we just delete them?”

Trust me, you need to be willing to let go. It isn’t personal, it isn’t about you. SEO is constantly evolving, and if you’re not adapting with it, you risk falling behind. Your hard work isn’t wasted—it’s just a stepping stone to better strategies.

Here are a few pointers when updating old content:

  • If you delete old posts, make sure to set up a redirect to a more relevant page. This ensures that any valuable traffic doesn’t get lost and will continue to contribute to your site’s SEO. 
  • When updating content, Google prefers to see the original published date left intact rather than changing it. Instead of publishing an entirely new post, keep the date and simply update the content. This helps maintain your site’s SEO value and shows that you’re keeping things current.
  • Don’t forget to optimize older content with new keywords, better user experience (e.g., adding images, bullet points, or tables for readability), and internal links to fresh posts. Even posts that once performed well can often be brought back to life with just a little update.

TLDR: Don’t get attached to content for the sake of content. If it stops working, be prepared to adapt and improve it.”
