A Free WordPress PDF Builder Plugin

If you’ve ever tried to generate a decent-looking PDF from inside WordPress, you already know how it goes.

You either end up with something that looks like a browser print job from 2012, or you spend an afternoon hunting for a plugin that sort of does what you need.

We’ve been on the other side of that frustration for a while.

That’s why we built PDFDraft, a free WordPress PDF builder plugin, at ThemeGrill.

PDFDraft lets you design and export PDFs inside your WordPress dashboard using a visual drag-and-drop editor. You can create custom PDF templates, start from ready-made designs, or convert WordPress posts and pages into downloadable PDFs.

PDFDraft at a Glance

PDFDraft is a free WordPress PDF builder plugin by ThemeGrill. It lets users design PDF documents inside WordPress using a drag-and-drop visual editor. The plugin currently supports custom PDF templates, ready-made templates, and post/page to PDF conversion. WooCommerce invoices and packing slips are planned next.

PDFDraft is built for common PDF workflows inside WordPress, including:

  • Downloadable PDFs for blog posts, guides, tutorials, and documentation
  • Branded PDF templates for lead magnets, reports, brochures, and handouts
  • Certificates, learning materials, and student resources for education websites
  • Client-ready PDF layouts for agencies and freelancers
  • WooCommerce invoices and packing slips, planned as part of the upcoming roadmap

Whether you want a quick post-to-PDF option or full control over the PDF design, PDFDraft gives you a flexible starting point inside WordPress.

Why We Built PDFDraft

We’ve been building WordPress themes and plugins at ThemeGrill since 2014. Over the years, we’ve worked on products that included PDF-related features, such as certificates, document outputs, and other downloadable files.

Those built-in tools served their specific purposes well. A certificate builder inside an LMS, for example, should focus on course completion. A document output feature inside another plugin should stay close to that product’s workflow.

But working on these features also made one thing clear: PDF creation in WordPress has much wider potential.

Site owners do not only need PDFs for one plugin or one use case. They need PDFs for blog posts, guides, certificates, invoices, receipts, handouts, reports, lead magnets, client documents, and many other workflows.

That broader need is what led us to PDFDraft.

We wanted to create a dedicated PDF builder for WordPress, not another product-specific PDF feature. PDFDraft gives users one visual workspace to design, customize, and export different kinds of PDFs, from content downloads and certificates to future invoice and order-based workflows.

The Problem with PDF Generation in WordPress

Generating PDFs in WordPress has never felt as simple as it should.

Browser print-to-PDF is fast, but it gives you very little control over the final layout. The output often looks more like a printed web page than a polished document.

Shortcode-based PDF plugins can work, but they usually expect users to understand markup, layout structure, or template logic. That makes them less practical for site owners who simply want to design a PDF visually.

Some SaaS tools connect to WordPress, but they often add another subscription and move PDF generation outside the site owner’s WordPress environment.

Page builder exports can help in simple cases, but they are usually designed around web pages rather than document-first PDF layouts.

We wanted a better middle ground: a visual PDF builder made specifically for WordPress users.

How PDFDraft Works

PDFDraft runs inside your WordPress dashboard and gives you a visual workspace for creating PDFs. Instead of working with shortcodes, markup, or browser print settings, you can design the document layout directly on a canvas.

You can add content, arrange elements, customize the design, and export the final PDF from the same WordPress environment you already use.

Design PDFs with a Visual Drag-and-Drop Builder

PDFDraft gives you a visual canvas for designing PDFs. You can place text, images, shapes, and other design elements where you want them, then export the final document.

This makes it easier to create PDFs that look like designed documents, not printed versions of web pages.

Start Faster with Ready-Made PDF Templates

PDFDraft includes growing library of ready-made PDF templates to help you start faster.

You can use a template as it is, or customize it to match your brand, layout, and content needs.

This is useful for creating brochures, certificates, reports, lead magnets, educational materials, and other downloadable documents.

Convert WordPress Posts and Pages to PDF

PDFDraft also lets you convert WordPress posts and pages into downloadable PDFs.

This is useful for bloggers, publishers, documentation sites, and content-heavy websites that want to give readers a simple way to save or download content.

For example, you can turn tutorials, guides, articles, or documentation pages into PDFs without manually rebuilding the content from scratch.

Who PDFDraft Is For

Bloggers and Publishers

PDFDraft helps bloggers and content websites turn posts, guides, tutorials, and long-form content into downloadable PDFs.

This can be useful for reader downloads, content upgrades, lead magnets, or offline reading resources.

Course Creators and Education Websites

Course creators can use PDFDraft to design certificates, handouts, worksheets, study materials, and other learning resources.

Instead of relying only on fixed certificate layouts or basic document outputs, you can create PDFs that better match your course brand.

Agencies and Freelancers

Agencies can use PDFDraft to create PDF outputs for client websites without adding a separate SaaS dependency.

This can be useful when clients need branded PDFs, downloadable resources, reports, or future invoice-related workflows inside WordPress.

WooCommerce Store Owners

WooCommerce invoice and packing slip support is planned next.

The goal is to help store owners create branded order-related PDFs from inside WordPress, including invoices, receipts, and packing slips.

Why PDFDraft Is Free

PDFDraft is available for free on WordPress.org, with no credit card required.

We’re still early and building the plugin around real user needs. That means your feedback can directly shape what comes next, from new templates to deeper integrations and more advanced PDF workflows.

If a PDF workflow would make PDFDraft more useful for your site, we want to hear about it.
